Birds And Bird Watching
I’ve heard recently that bird watching is the second most popular hobby in the United States. For those that are interested, gardening occupies the number 1 spot.
With so many people interested in birds, it seemed like a good subject for a web site. Sure, there are a lot of web sites dedicated to birds in one form or another, but I believe this site will be unique in one interesting and important way:
A good portion of the information presented here is from various public domain sources, some of which is not found anywhere else on the Internet that I am aware of. I will also be adding my own observations where appropriate.
Some of the information here is from writings and observations that are quite dated, but where the behavior of birds is concerned, much has remained as it was a hundred or more years ago. I suspect any behavior on the part of birds that has changed has to do with how humans have changed the environment over the years or perhaps even natural changes in climate that play out over the centuries.
It’s also interesting to note some of the comments that were made years ago when environmental issues were obviously not much of a concern in this country. It is hard to imagine people hunting songbirds, but apparently it was done for such foolish reasons as collecting brightly-colored feathers to adorn clothing.
Thankfully, hunting of our native songbirds is now illegal although I suspect there are a few small-minded individuals who will shoot a songbird just for fun.
Although information on a good number of birds is presented here, the material is partial to birds that normally inhabit the New England area, specifically, New Hampshire, since that is where I am located.
Being located in Southern New Hampshire, any information I am able to include here as a result of my own observations will be limited to species that are found in that area.
It is my hope that you will find the information here useful.
